For Those That Came Before

Every scent we create is forged from inspiration, a spark, like kindling to a match, that becomes an endeavor to interpret the incentive into an olfactory experience. The first sentence of this division of the line, the spark that lit the flame, begins with, my son went to Standing Rock...

It was his Christmas present, all he desired he said, two tickets to Standing Rock Indian Reservation in the Dakotas to join in solidarity with the largest gathering of Native American tribes in modern history in protest of the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline which runs through treaty protected lands, below the Missouri River, threatening the clean water supply.

In an effort to stand with him and beside indigenous people to highlight their plight, we decided to focus on three extraordinary First Nation women, Zitkala Sa (Red Bird), political activist, musician, write and editor, Susan La Flesche Picotte, the first Native American doctor and Christine Quintasket (Morning Dove) the first Native American female author.

A portion from every candle and matchbox sold goes to Adopt an Elder which works with the Navajo Nation to provide necessities that help the older population on the reservation to remain within in their tribe and culture.

While substantial strides have been made by indigenous people to improve their quality of life and resurrect their sovereign and formidable nations from the abyss of poverty, disease and despair, there are still significant obstacles ahead. In whatever small way we can, we are determined to raise our voice beside theirs in a continued struggle for justice. It is our belief that that their culture holds the key for living in harmony with the earth and its inhabitants and to lose that is to lose the blueprint for life itself.
